Tuberculosis is still a major public health problem, and to diagnose and treat the most difficult cases the department has a dedicated tuberculosis ward. Under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP), a single-window facility for the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis functions within the department, with a Medical Officer, a TB Health Worker and Laboratory Technicians.
Sputum smear examination for AFB, CBNAAT and TruNAAT are available in the institution, while Line Probe Assay and conventional AFB culture are performed at the regional IRL Centre, Puducherry. The department also provides Tuberculosis Preventive Therapy (TPT).
The department is a nodal centre for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis, providing diagnosis and treatment for patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis from the whole of Thiruvarur district and the adjacent districts.
