The Department of Anatomy is one such arena where the "dead teaches the living". Anatomy forms the cornerstone on which the castles of the knowledge of Surgery and Medicine are laid upon. The Anatomy Department, Government Thiruvarur Medical College, Thiruvarur, never fails to astonish the young ambitious minds. The extravagant field of Anatomy is always a gateway for unquenchable desire for learning. We have been successful in imparting detailed and complete knowledge of Human Anatomy from microscopic to macroscopic stratum which includes Gross Anatomy, Osteology, Histology, Embryology, Cross Sectional Anatomy, Genetics, Surface Anatomy, Radiological Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy. Our department is committed to excellence in teaching undergraduate students since 2010 and guiding various co‑curricular activities for the learners to explore their talents in all fields.
The embalming process of cadavers is done in accordance with the Anatomy Act, and the unclaimed bodies of Non‑Medico Legal Cases are embalmed and used for dissection and research purposes. For the benefit of the medical community, we encourage Voluntary Body Donation after death.
Academic & Co‑curricular Activities
We teach Anatomy under the following courses — MBBS, B.Sc., Allied Health Sciences, Diploma in Radiation Technology and Medical Record Technician. We conduct theory and practical classes. For vertical integration, Elective postings for Third MBBS Part‑II students are allocated.
We conduct Small Group Discussions and student symposiums periodically to enhance public speaking capabilities and competitive spirit among young minds. We also encourage and guide students to participate in Model making and Poster presentations which fuels their creativity.
Early Clinical Exposure
As a part of CBME curriculum, First year MBBS students are given exposure to clinical fields by visiting the Wards in Medicine department, Surgery department, Orthopaedics Department and OPD. This enables the students to correlate the basic sciences they learnt and clinical applications of the same, which provides practical knowledge to their theoretical learning and also increases interest in basic science subjects.
AETCOM Module
As a part of CBME curriculum, First year MBBS students were taught the Longitudinal, Structured AETCOM module as suggested by NMC — 'CADAVER AS A FIRST TEACHER' and 'FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNICATION'.
Laboratory Facilities
Our department is well equipped with:
Elective Postings
At the end of Third MBBS‑Part I and Beginning of Third MBBS Part‑II, Students who opt Anatomy for the elective postings are trained in the topics like Human Musculo‑skeletal Anatomy, Surgical Anatomy, Histopathology of organs.
We are committed to enlighten our students with the knowledge of Anatomy and encourage them for a constant learning of anatomy and their applications in various fields of medicine and surgery.
