The basic clinical functions of the Department of General Medicine have been made available from the first  day of inception  of  this  college from 1st April 2010, with the requisite faculty and infrastructure  stipulations as laid  down  by  the  MCI.

Over the subsequent period, till now, as per the guidelines and principles laid down in MCI regulations and the norms of the Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University, the department has been documenting  a progressive pace of growth in the spheres of  development, patient care, academic and research activities.

This had been made possible only by the constant support and guidance of the Directorate of Medical Education. For the past 15 years this Department has been served and guided by various eminent Professors and doyens in the field of medicine.

The Emergency Medical ward in casualty  is functioning round the clock and is well equipped to tackle all emergencies. The critical care wards viz. Medical Intensive care unit , Intensive  coronary  care  unit , and High definition unit(HDU) are functioning round the clock in our Medical College with 40 beds.

The course offered in our college are undergraduate medical degree  course  (MBBS) and Postgraduate master degree course (MD) awarded by the National Medical council as  per  rules and regulations with  an  annual  intake  of 100 MBBS students and 8 Postgraduate students. The rules, regulations and syllabus governing the undergraduate and Postgraduate degree course are strictly followed as per guidelines from  the Tamil Nadu  Dr MGR Medical university  and the Medical Council of India.

Total number of medical units – 4. Each unit is headed by a Professor/ Associate Professor.

1st unit   is  headed  by a professor  who  is also  the  HOD  of  the  department, have  an Associate  professor  as  his  deputy, have  1  asst  professor, 1  senior resident, 2 junior  residents.

2nd , 3rd,4th, units  are  headed by an Associate  professor &  have two Assistant Professors, one Senior Resident and two Junior residents .

Out Patient services:

Out Patient services in the Department of Medicine is being conducted on all days including Government holidays from 7.30am to 12.00 noon by Assistant professors/Senior residents.   

If admitted, all critically ill patients are attended by Casualty medical officers initially to triage and subsequently  handed over to duty Assistant Physicians (DAP) – on  24 hrs duty daily.

Emergency patients:
Emergency patients are attended at casualty 24hours/ 7 days a week by Casualty Medical Officers  and subsequently seen by DAP(Duty Assistant Physician). After triaging, patients are shifted to the appropriate  facility ( AE ward/IMCU/ICCU/HDU/Medical wards) for further management.

Special clinics 

The various systemic diseases of vital importance with life threatening potential are attended to at our services offered in various  special clinics.

Special clinics are  as follows:

  1. Cardiology clinic (Monday, Thursday)  –  attended by Specialist
  2. Neurology clinic (Tuesday, Friday) –  attended by Specialist
  3. Nephrology Clinic (Monday, Wednesday)  –  attended by Specialist
  4. Geriatric clinic (Daily)  –  attended by Specialist
  5. Diabetic clinic  (NCD clinic on all days in Medicine OPD)
  6. Hypertension clinic (NCD clinic on all days in  Medicine OPD)
  7. Gastroenterology Clinic (Wednesday in Medicine OPD)
  8. Endocrinology Clinic (Friday in Medicine OPD)
  9. Master Health Check up

Cardiology clinic:

Cardiology clinic is conducted on Mondays and Thursdays between 10am and 12noon. 

Coronary Artery disease patients are followed up regularly and given monthly medicines.

I H D patients, Rhuematic heart disease and congenital heart disease patients are followed up and new patients are registered  for regular care.

Regularly ECHO cardiogram, TMT is being done by the cardiologist in the IP building, three days a week.

 CORONARY angiogram has been started in our college from March 2024 and around 500 cases done so far.

 Neurology clinic :

Neurology  clinic  is conducted  on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10am and 12noon  Here  the patients who are under regular follow up for stroke, peripheral  neuropathy and chronic degenerative,& demyelinating disorders and seizure disorders are monitored periodically and given monthly medicines.

Regularly EEG, Nerve conduction studies are being done two days a week in the IP building.

Diabetology and Hypertension clinic:

Diabetic and Hypertension patients are seen on all days in NCD clinics between 10am and 12noon and given regular monthly medicines when  they  come  for  review.

Geriatric Clinic :

Geriatric clinic is conducted on all days between 8am and 12noon. All type of Geriatric patients are seen daily in the OPD and special care is being given to them by an  qualified Geriatric physician.

 Nephrology Clinic:

Conducted on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10am and  12noon.  All  cases of CKD are being followed up regularly in this clinic.

Daily Hemodialysis / Peritoneal Dialysis is being done in the dialysis ward (II floor IP building) for all CKD/AKIpatients.

Masterhealthcheckup:

It functions  on all government working days between 8.00 am to 12.00 noon. Comprehensive health care screening is done for all the patients here and referred to appropriate departments if needed.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES 

The 1st , 2nd and final clinical year medical students OP clinics are conducted  by the Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors in turn from 8-00am to 10 am on all Government working days.

IP clinics for 1st, 2nd and final year students are conducted by the same faculty from 10-00 am to 12-00 noon on all Government Working days. 

Weekly assessment sessions are held for the students on Saturdays from 10-00 am to 12-00 noon by Associate professors and Professor. In the IP sessions, clinical demonstration is being done for all basic clinical procedures and clinical signs is being taught to all the students. 

Theory classes as per CBME for 1st clinical,  2nd clinical year students and final year students are conducted in the post lunch session as per the MGR Medical University syllabus in the lecture hall of GTMCH.

For Postgraduates, Academic activities are conducted from Monday to Saturday (12pm-2pm) in IP building-HARRISON HALL.
