Anatomy

The Department of Anatomy is one such arena where the “dead teaches the living”. Anatomy forms the cornerstone on which the castles of the knowledge of Surgery and Medicine are laid upon. The Anatomy Department, Government Thiruvarur Medical College, Thiruvarur, never fails to astonish the young ambitious minds. The extravagant field of Anatomy is always a gateway for unquenchable desire for learning. We have been successful in imparting detailed and complete knowledge of Human Anatomy from microscopic to macroscopic stratum which includes Gross Anatomy, Osteology, Histology, Embryology, Cross Sectional Anatomy, Genetics, Surface Anatomy, Radiological Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy. Our department is committed to excellence in teaching undergraduate students since 2010 and guiding various co-curricular activities for the learners to explore their talents in all fields.

      The embalming process of cadavers is done in accordance with the Anatomy Act, and the unclaimed bodies of Non- Medico Legal Cases are embalmed and used for the dissection and research purposes. For the benefit of medical community, we encourage the Voluntary Body Donation after death.

Academic and Co-curricular Activities:           

       We teach Anatomy under the following courses – MBBS, B.Sc., Allied health Sciences, Diploma in Radiation Technology and Medical Record Technician. We conduct theory and practical classes. For vertical integration, Elective postings for Third MBBS part-II students are allocated.

       We conduct Small Group Discussions and student symposiums periodically to enhance the Public speaking capabilities and competitive spirit among young minds. We also encourage and guide students to participate in Model making and Poster presentations which fuels to their creativity.

Early Clinical Exposure:

       As a part of CBME curriculum, First year MBBS students are given exposure to clinical fields by visiting the Wards in Medicine department, Surgery department, Orthopaedics Department and OPD. This enables the students to correlate the basic sciences they learnt and clinical applications of the same, which provides practical knowledge to their theoretical learning and also increases interest in basic science subjects.

AETCOM Module:

       As a part of CBME curriculum, First year MBBS students were taught the Longitudinal, Structured AETCOM module as suggested by NMC- ‘CADAVER AS A FIRST TEACHER’ and ‘FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNICATION’.

 LABORATORY FACILITIES:

        Our department is well equipped with an elaborate Dissection hall, Histology lab, Museum, Research lab and a Department Library.

 ELECTIVE POSTINGS:

         At the end of Third MBBS-Part I and Beginning of Third MBBS Part-II , Students who opt  Anatomy for the elective postings are trained in the topics like Human Musculo skeletal Anatomy, Surgical Anatomy, Histopathology of organs.

        We are committed to enlighten our students with the knowledge of Anatomy and encourage them for a constant learning of anatomy and their applications in various fields of medicine and surgery.

CME ON FEMALE Reproductive System, “EILEITHYIA”

        On 06-09-2022, various competitions for MBBS students of Government Thiruvarur Medical College and Government Medical College, Nagapattinam and Paramedical students of Government Thiruvarur Medical College were participated. The competitions conducted for the students were Quiz, Model making and Rangoli.

CME ON FEMALE Reproductive System, “EILEITHYIA” on 07th September 2022 was conducted jointly by the Departments of Physiology and Anatomywhich was awarded 2 credit hours by TN State Medical Council and 10 credit points under Category III by The TN Dr. MGR Medical University .The aim was to impart in-depth knowledge about the Genesis, Anatomy and Physiology of Female Reproductive system and its clinical importance.
