HISTORY

The Department of Pathology was started in the year 2010 in Government Thiruvarur Medical College. Over the years it has grown steadily in all dimensions. Currently , it has an Academia of 2 Professors , 1 Associate Professor , 4 Assistant Professors and 2 Tutors. It plays a crucial role in medical education and patient care . It offers comprehensive diagnostic services through 4 major functioning laboratories including Histopathology, Cytopathology, Hematology and Clinical Pathology . The department caters to nearly 100 to 120 outpatients everyday and 300 to 350 inpatients everyday and generates laboratory reports for all the specialities .

DEPARTMENT MILESTONES :

IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY :

It was started in the year 2022 and includes all the basic panels for epithelial , mesenchymal and lymphoma markers .

AUTOMATED INSTRUMENTS :

The department is equipped with automated and semiautomated hematology , cogulation analysers and tissue processor . Quality check is being done regularly to ensure issue of precise and timely results to the patients .

PATHOLOGY MUSEUM :

 A good pathology museum is intended to strengthen the intellectual material for the undergraduate students and we, at our Pathology museum have nearly 150 mounted specimens.

TRINOCULAR MICROSCOPE :  

A recent addition to our department is the Trinocular Microscope which will enable us to provide quality education to our UG students and paramedical students.

MEDICAL EDUCATION :

In addition to its diagnostic services , the department is actively involved in teaching undergraduate and paramedical students , providing them with essential knowledge and  practical skills in pathology . Through a combination of lectures , seminars , laboratory sessions , periodic internal assessments  students gain a thorough understanding of disease mechanisms and diagnostic techniques .

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS :

Many of our Undergraduate Students have bagged prizes in various quiz and poster presentations in CMEs conducted at various  Medical colleges.

INVESTIGATIONS WORKLOAD FOR THE YEAR 2024 :
At our department, We have received nearly 3064 histopathology
specimens , 19858 hematological investigations ,1354954 clinical pathology investigations
and 1698 cytopathological investigations . All the lab reports have been duly dispatched and
sent to the concerned specialties
