Physiology
We strongly believe that The Physiology Department, Government Thiruvarur Medical College, Thiruvarur is an intellectually vibrant place. We have been successful in imparting detailed and complete knowledge of normal functioning of human body, and understanding the difference between physiological and pathological states. This provides relevance and mean, when students go to clinical posting in second MBBS onwards. Our department is committed to excellence in teaching under graduate students since 2010 and guiding various co-curricular activities.
- Academic activities
We teach Physiology for the following courses – MBBS, B. Sc Allied health Sciences students, Diploma in Radiation Technology and Medical Record Technician. We conduct theory classes in the forenoon and practical classes and tutorials in the afternoon sessions. Also Elective postings for Third MBBS part-II students
Early Clinical Exposure: as a part of CBME curriculum, First MBBS students are given exposure by visiting the Wards (I. V Fluid management), Blood Bank (Blood Collection and Storage), Nephrology (Dialysis procedure), and Neurology OPD. This enables the students to correlate the basic science taught and clinical applications of the same, which provides a relevance and mean to their learning. Also increases interest in basic science subjects
AETCOM Module: as a part of CBME curriculum, First MBBS students are taught the Longitudinal, Structured AETCOM module as suggested by NMC, enables the students learn the Ethics and Communication, Principles of Empathy etc.
CAL: as a part of CBME curriculum, First MBBS students are trained in the Computer Assisted learning module in Amphibian Nerve, Muscle experiments and Cardiac experiments as per the NMC guidelines.
- Co-curricular Educational activities
We conduct small group discussions, debates and student symposiums periodically to enhance the competitive spirit among young minds. We also encourage and guide students to participate in Inter college quiz competitions, Model making, Poster making and oral / poster presentations.

Our department is well equipped with the following

2. Bicycle Ergometer
3. Computerized ECG machine
4. Physiopac machine
5. Physiograph
6. HRV Analysis equipment
- Research activities
Members of the faculty of the Department of Physiology are involved in collaborative research with various clinical Departments. We have been guiding medical students in ICMR –Short Term Student projects.
- Elective Postings
As per the NMC directions for CBME curriculum. At the end of Third MBBS-Part I and Start of Third MBBS Part-II , Students who opt physiology for the elective postings are trained in the following elective postings for BLOCK-I
